Recently I read a book about the meaning of Architects and wanted to share what I gleaned from the experience with you in this article.

Proposals to replace an existing building in the green belt which is of low quality in terms of design and structural condition with a new building may be permitted. Where a replacement dwelling's location in the curtilage would result in a lesser impact in the Green Belt than that of the existing dwelling, the Local Planning Authority will require the replacement dwelling to be positioned accordingly. In other cases the Local Planning Authority will require the replacement dwelling to be located in the same place as the existing dwelling. What if, instead, it concentrated on its function as an asset for the communities it serves: providing access to green infrastructure and protecting and enhancing biodiversity, while at the same time recognising the existing economic requirement for urban growth? Aspects Of Design Quality

Architects that design for the green belt have a client-led focus, that does away with pre-prescribed ideas about how a project should be designed. The resulting homes always manage to look perfectly at home in their (often rural) landscapes. When assessing proposals to convert them, councils will consider the length of time the building has been in agricultural use to ensure that the building is lawful. Green specifications provide a good set of guidelines for the building industry, but these are still in the process of being formalised into UK regulation and many are open to interpretation. The successful conversion of a property in the green belt will take account of and respect the style and detail of the building(s), bring out the character, retain and re-use features and retain and use the existing spatial qualities of the interior. The highest goal of green architecture is to be fully sustainable. Simply put, people do "green" things in order to achieve sustainability. There is a substantial demand to extend dwellings within the Green Belt. Although house extensions can, in principle, be appropriate development within the Green Belt, large extensions can substantially change the original appearance of a rural building and can have a cumulative effect on the character of the Green Belt. The Battle For The Green Belt

Some would argue that the Green Belt hasn't helped the environment or decreased the amount of building, it's just pushed towns out further.
